A Brief Of Girl Child Network |

|
The Girl Child Network was born from the shared need by organizations working with children to streamline activities and interventions on children in Kenya. In 1995, CARE Kenya held a workshop with key stakeholders and organizations to identify the largest in child programming. Though there were many interventions in the sector there was little impact on the plight of the child. The most important need was found to be in the coordination and dissemination of information in the area of child programming.
It is in this realization, therefore, that the GCN came into being, primarily to mainstream children activities in the development sector through advocacy, information sharing and strengthening of children programming in Kenya. CARE Kenya was given the responsibility of getting the Girl Child Network running and, at the same time, coordinating and hosting the network for a period of three years before handing it over to another organization. The idea of rotational hosting was implemented in an effort to create and maintain a feeling of ownership among the members.
It is against this background that representatives of the Government departments, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s), multi/Bilateral organization/donors and individual interested in the girl child sector conceived the Girl Child Network (GCN). Girl Child Network seeks to mainstream girl child activities in development sectors through advocacy, information sharing and strengthening of girl child programming in Kenya.
